SDIRA custodians

Rocket Dollar

Rocket Dollar sets up self-directed retirement accounts, a self-directed IRA and a self-directed Solo 401(k), that can hold alternative assets. Account holders can invest in real estate, private equity, startups, crowdfunding, peer-to-peer loans, farmland, precious metals, and cryptocurrency, subject to IRS rules on prohibited transactions, which the account holder is responsible for following.

There are three tiers. The classic self-directed IRA runs every transaction through the custodian and suits one-time investments. The checkbook IRA adds an IRA trust with its own checking account so no custodian sign-off is needed on each transaction, the option the company points at private notes, limited partnerships, private stock, and self-custodied crypto. The Solo 401(k) adds a trust checking account, unlimited fee-free wire transfers, a loan option, and Roth and traditional in one account, for people with self-employment income.

Accounts are opened online, funded by contribution, transfer, or rollover from another custodian, and then used to invest. Rocket Dollar says setup takes under five minutes, while transfers can take from several business days to a few weeks depending on the prior custodian. The custodian of record is Digital Trust, which may charge its own transaction or asset-related fees on top of the subscription.

Pricing is published: $30 a month plus a $360 one-time setup fee for the classic IRA, $40 a month plus $600 for the checkbook IRA with trust, and $50 a month plus $900 for the Solo 401(k), with discounts on second and later accounts. Refunds can be requested within 10 days of payment. The company was founded in 2018 and states that it does not provide tax, legal, or investment advice.
