Clean Harbors provides hazardous and non-hazardous waste management, emergency spill response, industrial cleaning and maintenance, and recycling across North America. Its customer base runs from chemical and general manufacturing to refineries, utilities, healthcare, education, engineering and consulting firms, transportation and government agencies, and includes a majority of Fortune 500 companies.

The business is split between environmental services, which covers waste disposal, household hazardous waste collection and chemical distribution, and industrial and field services, which covers industrial and specialty cleaning, daylighting and hydro excavation, and oil, gas and lodging support. The Safety-Kleen subsidiary re-refines and recycles used oil and supplies parts washers and environmental services to commercial, industrial and automotive customers. A 24-hour emergency response line is staffed for spills and releases.

The company was founded in 1980, is based in Massachusetts, and operates in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico. It reports more than 15,000 full-time employees, upwards of 400 locations and over 100 detailed safety policies, and states that six of its hazardous waste management facilities have been admitted to OSHA's Voluntary Protection Program Star program, with further sites in progress.
