The CCIM Institute administers the Certified Commercial Investment Member designation and provides education, technology and networking for commercial real estate professionals. The designation traces back to exchange and taxation courses created in 1959, became part of the National Association of REALTORS in 1967 and took its current name in 1969.
A candidate earns the designation by completing the curriculum, passing the comprehensive exam, submitting a portfolio of qualifying experience and committing to the institute's code of ethics and standards of practice. Beyond the designation the institute offers professional development: a CRE development certificate, financial investment tools courses at basic, intermediate and advanced levels, market analysis and technology courses, an introduction to commercial real estate certificate program, residential real estate financial analysis and an on-demand library.
Members join local chapters for networking, deal-making and additional education, and the institute runs forums, a trade show schedule and a member-facing publication. It reports more than 13,000 members and 59 local chapters, with members in more than 30 countries. It states that 47% of members are brokers and the remaining 53% are investors, developers, consultants, property managers, tenant reps, corporate real estate executives, landlord representatives, appraisers and lenders.
Since 1967 more than 20,000 professionals have completed the designation program.
